About New Covenant

In July of 1997, Willie J. Smith, Jr. had an urgency in his spirit to start a ministry in Gadsden, AL. He continued to seek God and after much prayer and preparation, he was led to 1212 Walnut St. The owners of the property allowed us to have our weekly services at this location.

The membership along with Pastor Smith agreed to incorporate in March, 1998 and one month later on April 16, 1998, New Covenant Church became incorporated.

As membership grew God began to speak to Pastor Smith concerning His purpose for New Covenant Church. On December 20, 1998 we held our first gospel concert to benefit the underprivileged families in the community. Six years later God graced us to transform a building into The Covenant Pantry Food Distribution Center which provides food to approximately 120 families per month. In April, 1999, we were able to purchase the property at 1212 Walnut St. and New Covenant Church continued to grow and God continued to speak to Pastor Smith's heart concerning the community.

In 2003 we purchased the house next to the church to be used as a transitional shelter for homeless women and their dependent children. The Covenant House was opened on February 28, 2005 and to date we have provided shelter to approximately fifty women and children. During the recent Hurricane Katrina tragedy, we provided shelter to approximately 50 hurricane survivors.

Our program description includes Crisis Intervention, Counseling, Emergency Shelter, Transitional Housing, Advocacy, Information / Referral, Support Group / Prevention.

The Covenant House promotes healthy community living by addressing hunger, homelessness, substance abuse, domestic violence and at-risk youth.

In November of 2006, we were blessed with the opportunity to purchase a larger facility at 303 S. 11th Street. This property is 25,000 square feet with 19 class rooms and will be the birthplace for our growing ministry ideas.  The new facility will accommodate spiritual growth conferences, empowerment classes, daycare, fitness center, and various other inreach and outreach ministries. We request your prayers as we continue to seek God so that we may fulfill our purpose and reach our destiny.
